Working on the mean streets of New York City as a law enforcement officer must be both rewarding and heartbreaking. To protect and serve usually entails a wide range of human emotions. Working with the New York City Police Department, whether as a lawyer, detective, commissioner, or beat cop, requires a special kind of person, from apprehending cr1minals to serving justice and putting one’s own life on the line.

Fans of the show “Blue Bloods” are probably drawn to it for these reasons. Aside from the usual drama of being a law enforcement agent in a law enforcement family, “Blue Bloods” features a strong cast with diverse perspectives on life shaped by their own personal experiences. Sure, there is some overlap between Reagan family members Danny (Donnie Wahlberg), Frank (Tom Selleck), Jamie (Will Estes), and Erin (Bridget Moynahan), but they all approach life and their jobs in very different ways.

With Season 13 of “Blue Bloods” on the horizon, Looper has asked fans which “Blue Bloods” character has the most heartbreaking storyline, and there appears to be a clear winner (or loser, depending on how you look at it).

Fans unanimously believe Danny Reagan has the most tragic story.

With the goal of determining who fans believe has the saddest story in “Blue Bloods,” we polled 618 US residents. The choices were narrowed down to members of the Reagan family: Frank, Jamie, Danny, Erin, and family patriarch Henry (Len Cariou). After tallying the votes, fans chose Danny Reagan as the character with the saddest story, receiving 31.07% of the vote. Jamie received 22.49% of the vote, Erin received 20.39%, Frank received 15.05%, and Henry received 11%. In other words, fans believe Danny has the most tragic story among the rest of his family.

Danny is known for his brash demeanor, but his outwardly gruff demeanor conceals deep loss and trauma. Danny is a detective in the New York Police Department and was previously an active duty Marine in the United States Armed Forces. Danny’s unit is nearly wiped out during a military tour in Iraq, leaving him as the sole survivor. Danny was traumatized by this event, but his heartbreak does not stop there.

Danny’s wife Linda (Amy Carlson) is k1lled in a tragic helicopter accident between Seasons 7 and 8. Danny’s home is also set on fire in the Season 7 finale for his actions during a drug bust. Because of these life events, fans most likely chose Danny to have the saddest personal story in “Blue Bloods,” and for good reason.
