Blue Bloods‘ final chapter is quickly approaching, and fans think they know how the long-running procedural is going to end.
On June 13, 2024, Donnie Wahlberg, who stars as Detective Danny Reagan, shared a behind-the-scenes video of the cast dancing to New Kids on the Block’s “Get Down.” In the caption, Wahlberg revealed that it was a “bittersweet day on set,” so the cast decided to try the infamous Get Down Dance Challenge to “lighten the mood.”
Eagle-eyed fans picked up on the formal attire that some of the cast members were wearing and began to speculate that they had just filmed the series finale, which will air some time in Fall 2024. In a Reddit thread, one fan pointed out that Will Estes, who plays Jamie Reagan, and Vanessa Ray, who portrays Eddie Janko, were both wearing white shirts, while the rest of the cast wore dark blue or black. The fan suggested that this could mean Jamie and Eddie are promoted to lieutenant, leaving Danny and Joe Hill (played by Will Hochman) as detectives.

Another user suggested that the cast “might’ve been filming Frank’s retirement party.” A separate fan agreed, noting: “Hopefully they don’t kill anyone off. No doubt Frank retires which is the only logical storyline to end the show.” There has been a lot of speculation that Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) will retire from his position as New York City Police Commissioner in the second half of the final season, but showrunner Kevin Wade doesn’t see that happening. “I’m pretty sure that Frank would stay in his job until the series ended,” he told TV Insider. “We didn’t really pursue that avenue because the show is built on him being the police commissioner of New York City.”
The EP added that he isn’t sure what a retired Frank Reagan would even look like. “To take a detour during the last mile, if this is the last mile, I don’t know what he would be doing down at the hardware store or having coffee with old buddies during the day,” Wade explained. “I always have to look at stuff that generates stories. Police Commissioner of New York generates stories. He’s the CEO of 35,000 cops.”
In the comments section of Wahlberg’s post, one fan theorized: “They’re dressed like they attended a funeral. Look at Sammie’s dress.” A second fan agreed, noting: “I’m thinking a funeral…all dressed in black and the ‘bittersweet’ comment…😳😔.” A third viewer chimed in, writing: “That’s what I noticed and was afraid of! And the father and grandfather aren’t there. If one of them passes on, would the family wear personal clothes or uniform??” Another fan guessed that Henry Reagan (Len Cariou), Frank’s father and the former Police Commissioner, will die. “In the video, you can see that Jamie’s white shirt has sergeant stripes, so it’s more likely to be a funeral than a sign of promotion. We’ve seen Jamie & Eddie in white shirts for funerals in season 8 and season 10,” a Reddit user pointed out.
Fans also highlighted the fact that Sami Gayle, who plays Nicky Reagan-Boyle, and Tony Terraciano, who stars as Jack Reagan, were featured in the video. Nicky is the only child of Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan), while Jack is Danny’s eldest son. Both characters have been relatively absent from the show in recent seasons, so fans were excited to see them back on set. “This is iconic. So glad to see Nicky and Jack back together with the family!” one viewer commented on Wahlberg’s post.
The long-running CBS procedural was cancelled back in November 2023, to the dismay of fans and cast members. In the months since, fans have been relentlessly trying to reverse the cancellation with their #SaveBlueBloods campaign. Several cast members have also spoken out against CBS’ decision, including Selleck. “I will continue to think that CBS will come to their senses,” the Magnum, P.I alum told CBS Newsin May 2024. “We’re the third-highest scripted show in all of broadcast. We’re winning the night. All the cast wants to come back. And I can tell you this: we aren’t sliding off down a cliff. We’re doing good shows, and still holding our place. So, I don’t know. You tell me!”
Despite the pleas to save the show, the network has remained committed to their decision to end Blue Bloods with Season 14, the second half of which is set to premiere this fall. However, there is some good news for fans. It appears that a Blue Bloods spin-off is currently in the works, though an offshoot hasn’t officially been confirmed.
