General Hospital spoilers reveal that the fans on social media wonder if Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), the celebrated mafia boss, is leaving the show.

Maurice Made Sonny Redeemable

Maurice has played Sonny since August 1993. He started as the quintessential “bad guy.” Everything John “Jagger” Cates (Adam Harrington) said about him is true.

He convinced an underage Karen Wexler (Cari Shayne) to work as a stripper at his nightclub, the Paradise Lounge. He got her hooked on drugs but claimed it was to try to “help her relax,” and eventually, he slept with her.

Maurice was supposed to only be on the show for six months, but his multi-layered portrayal of such a villain caught the attention of the powers that be. They offered him a contract.

Truth be told, Sonny wasn’t the least bit redeemable until his romance with Brenda Barrett (Vanessa Marcil). The two of them had unforgettable chemistry and became a fan favorite. Pairing him with Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) later on was a brilliant move, and they were also a hit.

Sonny’s depiction of a profoundly complex mobster captivated fans, who clamored for more Sonny. Over thirty years later, he’s still on the show.

However, with the direction they have been taking with the character lately, fans want to know if the actor could be leaving the show. Fans on Twitter were considering if we are seeing the final days of Sonny Corinthios.

Fans know Benard will eventually retire and focus more on mental health advocacy. His YouTube show, “State of Mind,” is hugely popular.

His podcast helps him and other people because it delves deep into the topic of mental health. Subjects like depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder are fair game, and Benard tackles them with honesty, relatability, and wisdom.

One of the posts says, “He has his podcast and his grandbabies. It sounds like a great time to retire with the option to visit. I know he talked about it on “State of Mind.” He has the grandchildren and thought about doing State of Mind full-time.”

Someone responded to the post,

“This is honestly what I have been thinking is going on with the storyline. Why else would they be dragging Sonny?”

Right now, GH is exploring Sonny’s bipolar medicine being tampered with. It’s probably a dark place for Maurice to go as an actor. Sonny and Benard both depend on this medicine.

Fans are concerned about the demands of playing this kind of story for Maurice and how it’s affecting his mental health, given his significant battle with bipolar disorder.

As Sonny spirals out of control, the law seems to be closing in on him, as Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) is intent on prosecuting him.

Sonny may be facing serious prison time, and even though he has managed to evade the law for years, this time, he may not be so lucky.

The writers would need to determine how to write him out of the show, whether it’s that Sonny goes to jail or some other type of open-ended exit with potential for short-term returns. Port Charles would never be the same without the “mobster with the heart of gold.”
